.22 seconds -- argh

Why is it that weekends go by SO fast?

Still training for Pelotonia so rode 100 miles on Saturday in 90 degree heat. Went through at least 8 liters of water and wasn't feeling super good in the heat but still was able to take pulls. We rode for 5 hours and 24 minutes which was 15 minutes slower than last week. I rode 50 last Sunday but the combination of heat and the chance to watch my friend Mike race his 1968 corvette changed that to a simple, slow 25 miler. Hope it cools down for Pelotonia!

You may remember Mike from this picture at RTR -- he drove the dualie and trailer out to Colorado. Mike is super talented with tons of interests. He has sailed competitively, he is a super strong bicylist and as an engineer can figure out, build, or fix anything. He's also super generous and helps everyone out. I swear he can do anything and has more energy and hobbies than anyone I've ever met!

Mikes race took place out on one of our parking lots just north of the Schott. There are several different classes from stock to street legal to the little ittie bittie (but REALLY fast) cars in the picture. First they race against like cars in their division -- Mike won his division! And then they get handicapped against the various divisions. They select the fastest based on their actual time and then a "handicap" time deduction based on the division of their car.

Mike made it through all of this into the top 16. At this point they draw randomly and race against another car -- handicap still in place. Mike won his first race off. His second though -- he lost by only .22 of a second. The agony -- to be so darn close. You know how he'll spend the night (well once he packs his car into the trailer, probably gets it home and cleans it, maybe some adjustments) -- thinking over and over again how he could have done better. Did I brake too early, did I coast into that turn, etc etc. And it also was bugging him he had had faster runs earlier in the day -- with one of those runs he would have easily beaten his opponent in this round and gotten into the final 4.

You win a trophy and it costs $40 to enter. So yes, most everyone is doing this for fun, for the rush, to go a little faster. But lets face it -- we always want to do a little better, beat one more person. We always want to win.
