America the Beautiful

I read somewhere that God must find most beatiful a crowded space -- a mall, a crowded subway, etc. -- full of his most majestic creation -- all makes and models crammed into one place.

I admit I much prefer the scenic landscape. Driving across country is always quite the experience. Ohio and Indiana are very similar in look -- take a quick nap and you wouldn't really know where you were. Illinios is flatter and full of farm fields -- corn, soybeans and occasionally hay or wheat fields fill the scenery. Missouri is a bit non-descript -- not all that much too see. The whole trip so far is an interesting visual switch from cities full of concrete, roads twisting here and there, rows of cars, smoke stacks, factories, sprinkle in an odd prison here and there -- and then poof country. There were a few beautiful stretches of tree lined highways to break up the crowded cities.

And then Kansas. Last year I dreaded Kansas as everyone always says how dreadfully flat and boring it is. Actually it's quite the opposite and my favorite state to drive through. Sure there are the towns and cities -- the concrete, bridges. There is an Air National Guard base with Chinooks and other helicopters that is fun. But it is the rolling landscape that captures my fancy. The open rangeland full of cattle roaming seemingly wild across the plains. It's quite a romantic visage and very beautiful. Wheat is a common crop and with the right sunshine (we haven't had any of that this trip!) you can really see where they came up with amber waves of grain -- it is really quite stunning. In some places the cattle roam in the median as the 2 opposite flowing highways are separated by vast open ranch land -- if you watch closely you can see the tunnels that allow them to flow from side to side. I don't envy the crew that set up (and now maintains!) all this fencing though!

We spent the night in Salina Kansas. Last year when we were here there was a tornado that hit 10 miles from us. While everyone else in the hotel lined up in the corridor we watched TV and debated the difference between a watch and a warning. At one point the 2 guys opened the window -- I thought they were going to get sucked out! We of course stayed blissfully unaware in our rooms -- the power went out and it was time to go to bed. Woke up in the morning to no power -- then it kicked on so we got up. We thought it was perfect -- until we realized how close we were!

So a little less excitement, a bit rainy, but a good trip so far. Sorry no pictures as I could get wireless but my computer wouldn't click on the internet -- hopefully I can get on again tonight on my own laptop. (Just adding photos now!)

Today we travel from Kansas into Colorado just West of Denver. The western part of Kansas is a bit dull. As is of course the Eastern part of Colorado. About 95 miles from Denver you catch the first site of the mountains -- and then everything changes visually.

God may prefer a crowded subway. I personally prefer the beauty, the balance, the majesy of his creation of nature. Either way I'm in awe.
