Best not to think too much on a week like this. Apparently there is a state law in Indiana that every lodge must be at the highest geographical point in the region and be a paved over goat path. Although today's was not nearly as steep - in the 10-15% range with a quick 19% for character - what it lacked in steepness it made up for in length. Only one climb early in the day hit a mere 23%, but overall the same amount of climbing.
A rather pedestrian 101 miles compared to yesterday. Day 1 had 1 mechanical, day 2 had 2. Hate to see that trend continue all week
Today one of the mechanicals was me. On the early climbs everytime I stood my brake grabbed. Couldn't figure it out. Then I went to pedal and it locked up and I pitched forward. If I was a boy I'd now be known as the uni-baller. As it was I banged my knee up good as I pitched forward and slammed down hard on the saddle. How I kept upright I don't know. My rear wheel fell out of the dropout. Not sure why or how but glad I wasn't descending.
Only saw 104 on the computer so it must be cooling down. Which is funny because it definitely feels like I'm in an oven.
In addition to icing my legs today I iced my undercarriage (Joe thinks that's too much info but it's my blog!). I sweat so much I have a bad case of diaper rash. Someone heard rubbing alcohol helps - after feeling like you're going to vomit it stings so bad I guess it does help - after that diaper rash feels good! We'll see tomorrow!
So Jim found a 4 leaf clover - he does that a lot. As we came back inside tonight a group of folks were playing cards. I saw a birthday cake and inquired - then we sang to celebrate - her husband had arranged a surprise party. The table playing cards proceeded to introduce themselves and explain that they were all brothers and sisters which I said disturbed me a little because where I'm from brothers and sisters aren't allowed to marry. So that was great fun and Jim gave the birthday girl the 4 leaf clover (by the way all of the in-laws were banished to a side table apparently they aren't allowed to play cards!)
So having trouble posting pictures but they are on Facebook
That's it for tonight. Must get a recovery nap in - leave again at 7 for 104 more miles!
217 down many more to go!
