Huh?

Do you have any of those pet peeve cliches? Kind of like: "they want their cake and eat it too?". REALLY? Now why would you have a cake if you weren't going to eat it? Otherwise what is the point?

One I do like is: "If you don't know where you are going you'll end up someplace else" -- yep that mostly describes me sometimes I think and it actually makes sense, well to me anyway!

Athletics is full of cliches and one liners that have varying degrees of reality and common sense.

"I want to rush for 1,000 yards or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first"

New Orleans Saint RB George Rogers

"I'm going to graduate on time, no matter how long it takes"
Sr BB Player and University of Pittsburgh

"He's a guy who gets up at six o'clock in the morning, regardless of what time it is"
Lou Duva on Andrew Golota

One that I've just never liked it: "I gave 110%" or other varying degrees of effort. Again, really? How can you give more than all you can give? If you could give more you should have and well, that would be 100% right? Where did that other 10 or 20% come from? Now I feel that you've been holding out, cheating me. Perhaps it's just a math error like the ones above.

But perhaps I need to re-think this whole thing. What is 110% really? If my maximum heart rate is X, what does it mean when I exceed that by 6%? Does my heart explode when I cross 100% of my maximum?

Well I tested the theory -- not entirely by choice. And while my heart didn't explode it sure felt like it was going to!

While I can't honestly say I gave it "110%" I can now at least say I gave it 106%!!

Hmm -- still think it sounds silly -- and "giving it 106%" sounds even sillier! But at least I have a cool graph to prove it!

  1. I have often wondered about those sayings - - not all made sense to me but then again alot of things don't make sense to me so I figured they were normal :-) Pretty chart ~ what were you having tested?
