10/2 is the day that Lance Armstrong, in his word "learned to Livestrong" -- now the rallying cry for cancer advocates worldwide.
Nike came up with a simple, silly yellow wristband and decided to sell them for $1 and made millions. Lance figured they'd sell a few to family and friends and have boxes and boxes left over. Instead they've sold over 50 million -- raising over $50 million for the Livestrong Foundation. Amazing how inspirational a simple wristband has proven to be.
What does it mean to LIVESTRONG? Let me show you.
I've been blessed to meet so many strong, inspirational survivors. Meet Blonda Gayheart -- a name I wore proudly on my jersey, an amazing woman I rode for during Pelotonia.
If cancer had it's way Blonda would not be here today. But her fighting spirit, her gentle soul, and strong faith in God gave her the strength to fight -- and win. Her story is much more remarkable than "just" another survivor story. You see, every member of her family -- all 10 or so siblings had cancer and succumbed to the disease -- her last surviving brother is very ill at this time with cancer. And Blonda fought in a most unconventional way -- she chose the whole, all natural, no chemical path. Seemingly risky, ultimately very successful and long term much much better for her.
Today she surrounds herself with love, her daughter, her granddaughter, friends and family. She wraps herself in the faith and love of God, and she lives -- LIVES -- every day -- every moment, every opportunity. Taking one blessing, the gift of a second chance at life, and sharing it forward time and time again.
She is a wonderful, remarkable women. I am proud to know her, honored that her family chose me to ride on behalf of her. Proud to know her family, to see the grace that wraps them all. Happy to have met her daughter -- who with her husband keep me healthy and on my bike.
LIVESTRONG Blonda, LIVESTRONG.
